URBAN SURVIVAL: Home Defense Without Firearms

Flamethrowers! great for home defense

As a guy who has lived in “no gun” cities like Washington DC and overseas in countries that have outlawed private ownership of firearms, figuring out how to defend my home without using a gun was something I had to work out.

I know it is a pretty unlikely event that I would ever have to defend my home from a burglary or a home invasion. But, like the Boy Scouts say “Be Prepared” so over the years I have come up with a few ideas just in-case ninjas attacked me wile I was at home watching South Park or something.

Chemical Sprays

One of the best ways to defend your home is with chemical sprays like OC (pepper spray) or CN. You must be careful when using them in confined spaces because they will leave sort of a ‘standing mist’ that could incapacitate you also.

For home defense I would suggest one of the foam based OC sprays, this type sprays a foam sort of like whipped cream that is infused with the OC chemical. Because it is not aerosol it will not mist as much.

If you only have access to the aerosol type of chemical sprays it is best to use it as an ‘area denial’ weapon. Basically this means you would stick your arm into the room where the threat exists and give a good long spray, then close the door. The room you sprayed will be like a box full of Mace causing most people to retreat or become incapacitated.

Edged Weapons

Unless you have had some sort of formal training in knife fighting then edged weapons should be a last resort. Using knives is much like using firearms - if you are not formally trained then you are as much a danger to yourself as you are to an attacker.

If you do have some formal training in edged weapons then I would suggest a large bladed knife (12 inch blade, but no longer than 24) used in a striking and jabbing manor (think 300 style).

Impact Weapons

Some good blunt weapons for home defense include children’s softball bats, police style batons (straight and PR-24) or any type of bat style club (a friend of mine uses a shark bat).

Avoid anything excessively long like bow staffs, or anything too thin like escrima sticks. You want your blunt weapon to be heavy enough to cause serious damage with a single hit but not so heavy you can not recover from a swing quickly.

Improvised Weapons

Some great improvised weapons include:

Fire Extinguisher: Spraying a Fire Extinguisher in someone’s face is an old trucker trick, be advised you can permanently blind someone.

Homemade Pepper Spray: Chop a bunch of hot peppers up and place them in a two-liter bottle until it is ¼ full, then fill 3/4th of the bottle up with water. Take a drill or something sharp and make a pencil sized hole on the cap, squeeze to dispense.

In Conclusion…

That's all I could think of right now, if you guys have some non-firearm weapons for home defense please share in the comments.
